November 20, 2014 was one of Schreiner’s Gardens’ darkest days.
Alejandro Vargas, a beloved employee of 35 years, died suddenly while at work planting in our fields. He was in apparent good health beforehand, and the shock of his death is still reverberating. Alejandro opened many hearts and made countless friends with his warmth and caring. His wonderful smile and joyous laugh made him popular.
For decades he worked very hard, and conscientiously – loading trucks, supervising, driving planters, and much more. Regardless of the weather, regardless if the job was unpleasant, or especially taxing – Alejandro lead by example – doing what had to be done, always with his pleasant disposition.
Our year-round crew of employees is like a second family. We have been together for a long time. Alejandro was one of the first to join our crew. His absence seems hard to comprehend. Our grief is heavy and Alejandro will be dearly missed.

How sad, and yet appropriate that he passed away surrounded by friends and the flowers he must have grown to love. Sudden as it came, death found him not alone, not sick, not afraid of what was to come. In some ways, I hope all who loved and worked with him can find comfort in knowing that. So sorry for your loss.

I don’t know Alejandro, I just know that he was wonderful and too young to leave the rest of you wondering … why? It saddened me deeply to see that smiling, happy person and to know he is no longer gladdening the earth and all iris lovers. You all have my deepest sympathy.
